Q: How long have you been in the nail industry and where about are you located?
I have been in the nail industry since 2013 and have been doing nail enhancements for the past 3 years now. I am a Canadian nail tech working with an amazing team at Shangri La Nails in Edmonton Alberta! (YEG stands for Edmontons airport code)
Q: What or who made you want to get into the nail industry and how did you start?
I loved painting my own nails and was obsessed with nail polish when I was younger. (Thinking back now, my nail polish collection was borderline excessive) With the help of Youtube nail design tutorials becoming popular, it led me to love designing my nails with something different every week.
I eventually took an esthetics program that included a nail enhancement certification course. Since then, I just stuck with nails!
Q: Where or how did you learn to do nails?
After my nail certification course, I was left very in the dark about how to do nails. I believe that became my drive to want to learn anything I could about nails to be like the artists I saw all over Instagram! There was a lot of experimenting involved.. I started to find out about classes and nail shows in the area & the rest is history!!
Q: What treatments do you offer?
I only offer gel nail enhancements.
Q:What are your favorite treatments and nail art techniques to do and why?
I think my favourite nail art techniques to do are the ones I never knew I could do before. The ones that stress you out in the process but end up turning out amazing in the end! I’m always up for something new and fun. And its always an awesome feeling when you’re like “Yay!! I did it!!”
Q: What advice would you give to any start up nail technicians?
Don’t be so hard on yourself and never give up! Keep a positive attitude and know that all the great techs that you admire have probably gone through some really tough times to get where they are right now!
Q: Who are your biggest nail inspirations and why?
My biggest nail inspirations are my team at Shangri La. @nailsbylarii_yeg @denisenails_yeg @zoenails_yeg & @helennails_yeg (duh!) They are the most positive and uplifting team to be working with. I am so grateful to have them by my side in this nail journey of mine!!
Q: Do you have a favorite set of nails you’ve created?
Q: What is your favorite thing about being a nail tech?
My favourite thing about being a nail tech is how I get to be creative! So many endless possibilities of designs and colors to choose from. I totally go into zen mode when I get super focused.
Q: What products do you use and which ones would you recommend?
For my gel line, I use Light Elegance Lexy Gels. I am in love with their gels because they’ve never let me down! Plus I love the quicker LED cure time. For colors, my current favourites are Bio Seaweed Gel & Ugly Duckling Gel colors! I love them because they go on so smoothly and are so pigmented.
Q: What is your favorite nail shape and why?
Its so hard to choose! I think it would have to be between a very tapered almond or stiletto (and they have to be long!!). I don’t know what it is about those shapes but I think they are just so sleek and makes your nails look so good no matter what design you put on them.
Q: If you had to pick one nail color to wear for the rest of your life what would it be and why?
Such a hard question, I would have to say a teal aquamarine type color. I just love that color so much. I don’t think I’d ever get sick of it.
Q: What are your goals for the future?
My goals for the future is to keep getting better and better everyday. I would love to take more classes and learn a bunch of new things.
Q: What is you biggest accomplishment so far in your nail career?
I believe my greatest accomplishment is being confident in my work. Being able to see your growth and achievements is one of the best feelings in the world.
Q: What is your top application tip?
Prepping the nail is the most important part of the service! If the prep is off, your whole set will be off!
